Supervises: Paid section leaders, guest musicians, and volunteers as applicable
Purpose:
To cultivate a vibrant, inclusive, and imaginative choral music ministry that invites all ages and abilities to participate in worship leadership. The Director of Choral Music and Worship Arts will be a creative partner in shaping Central’s future—blending tradition and innovation, community and excellence, theology and artistry.
Core Responsibilities:
• Choral Leadership
o Recruit, rehearse, and direct the adult choir for Sunday services and special events.
o Explore and implement innovative models of choir participation (e.g. pop-up choirs, seasonal ensembles, intergenerational collaborations).
o Mentor and equip musicians of all skill levels to offer their gifts in worship.
• Musical Collaboration
o Work in coordination with the Pastor, Organist, Bell Director, Worship Team, and staff to plan music for worship, ensuring theological and liturgical alignment with the Reformed tradition.
o Incorporate a range of musical styles including global, spirituals, Taizé, classical, and contemporary.
o Collaborate with local artists, Purdue University programs, and ecumenical partners to bring diverse musical voices to worship.
• Worship Arts Innovation
o Envision and pilot creative worship experiences that engage multiple senses and musical forms.
o Support congregational singing through well-curated selections and clear leadership.
o Participate in special services (e.g., Holy Week, Christmas Eve, All Saints’).
• Administration
o Schedule and lead regular rehearsals and music preparation.
o Coordinate with office staff to provide accurate worship planning details and copyright compliance.
o Manage a designated music budget and propose future funding needs.
o Secure guest musicians and provide leadership for special musical events (e.g., hymn sings, sacred concerts, musical meditations).
Qualifications:
• Strong choral conducting experience, ideally with church choirs or community-based ensembles.
• Proficiency in reading music and teaching vocal parts; piano or keyboard skills desirable but not required.
• Passion for sacred music and a theology of inclusion and beauty.
• Comfort working with volunteers and nurturing musical gifts in others.
• Openness to experimentation and non-traditional models of music ministry.
• Familiarity with Presbyterian (PCUSA) or liturgical Christian traditions, or willingness to learn.
Compensation & Support:
This is a part-time salaried position, with compensation between $12,000 and $14,000 annually commensurate with experience and scope. In addition, Central’s Foundation provides designated support for:
• Section leaders or guest musicians
• Special worship events or community collaborations
• Continuing education and professional development
Note:
This position is intentionally open to musicians who may not fit traditional molds. We’re seeking someone with both musical excellence and collaborative spirit—someone who brings creative vision and has experience directing choirs or leading congregational music. While formal training is valued, we also recognize the gifts of those whose journeys may not follow traditional paths. If you feel called to this work, we encourage you to start a conversation with us.
